Magic Mask and Depth Map as starting points

AI segmentation estimates a subject or depth relationship. It can produce useful isolation quickly, but difficult edges, motion blur, and occlusion still require judgment and cleanup.

What you’ll be able to do

Inspect and refine AI-generated mattes before using them in a final grade.

Work through it

  1. Choose a short shot with a distinct moving subject. Add a dedicated node and use Magic Mask’s available selection controls on a useful reference frame.
  2. Track the selection through the shot and inspect the matte, particularly hair, hands, crossing objects, and the first and last frames.
  3. Use the mask for a subtle correction before attempting a dramatic background replacement. Repair failures with additional guidance, windows, or an alternative selection technique.
  4. Test Depth Map on another node for a broad spatial separation. Adjust the depth range and softness while checking that the estimated depth remains stable during movement.

A mistake to avoid

A plausible depth preview is not an accurate 3D scan. Blur and relighting based on unstable depth can pulse or create halos.

Your turn

Create a gentle background-versus-subject separation in a five-second shot. Exaggerate it temporarily to find matte failures, then restore a natural strength.
